Project Based Learning (PBLs)
At Eva Legard, each grade level participates in “Action Projects”. Action projects combine Project-Based Learning with Service Learning.
The 6th grade action project will focus on the school site.
Students will work on the school site, gardening and beautifying the Eva Legard Center campus will be the focus of this project. The food grown by the students will be either consumed by the students or donated to the local community.
The 7th grade action project will focus on the Eva Legard Center neighborhood. Students will participate in the Consider Litter program and will create an awareness campaign for the neighborhood. The students will present this plan to local government officials and/or businesses to reduce litter in the neighborhood.
The 8th grade action project will focus on the city of Baton Rouge. Students will work throughout the school year creating sustainable Mardi Gras throws for parades. The students will work with the McKinley High School parade to create a sustainable and environmentally friendly parade. The students may walk after local parades to collect broken and unwanted throws in order to reuse or recycle them.
Positive Behavior Intervention System (PBIS)
The Positive Behavior Intervention System is implemented in order to aid in students’ behavior choices. The goal is to incentivise positive Behavior choices with special rewards, such as privileges (free dress day), access to special events (field days, dress up days, etc.), and prizes (snacks, treats, small rewards.)
PBIS encourages students to follow 4 main principles:
- Be Respectful
- Be Responsible
- Be Positive
- Be Safe
The guidelines for PBIS are as follows:
- Students shall receive incentives for following the PBIS Policy and exhibiting the Eva Legard Scholar Characteristics.
- Students will receive Class Dojo points and must reach a monthly goal to receive incentives.
- There will be monthly school events for students who have not received any disciplinary referrals.
- There will be an end-of-the-year event for students who have not received any disciplinary referrals for the entire school year.
Consider Litter
The Consider Litter project is designed to empower community members (students, teachers, businesses and local leaders) in dialogue and stewardship on the removal and prevention of marine debris from Louisiana’s Barataria, Pontchartrain and Terrebonne basins—communities disproportionately impacted by pollution and historically marginalized. By focusing on Title I schools, Consider Litter will build a network of visible and diverse community stewards who can monitor litter in their communities and compile data that can help inform resulting prevention/mitigation projects. The project is being coordinated in partnership with the Pontchartrain Conservancy.
Eva Legard hosts monthly Pickup Days at their location down the road from the school, collecting, sorting, weighing and cataloging trash to determine the best Action Plan to reduce waste in the community. Stay tuned for updates on the research and initiatives we take implement throughout the year!

Course Progression
Eva Legard’s course progression allows for students to take courses that will provide them with advanced credits on a high school and collegiate level. The EBRPSS science department is allowing Eva Legard Center to teach Earth Science for a high school credit as opposed to Environmental Science. This concept will be applied across disciplines to provide Middle School students to receive high school credits and High School students to begin an undergraduate programs with credits under their belt.
